The United States topped the list of the world’s largest crude oil and gas producers in 2014. The country outpaced Saudi Arabia and Russia in the production of crude oil and gas for last three years. Even though the US is facing the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in response to its consequences on the climate, the US has taken a leadership role in the global oil and gas industry.
The US surpassed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) as the world’s leading oil producer in 2013 because of evolution of fracking technique, which has allowed the US shale oil and shale gas fields to produce more shale oil and natural gas than ever before. The US used fracking in its shale fields in Pennsylvania and other eastern states and surpassed Russia as the largest gas producer in 2012.
