State hearing board denies claim that gas well contaminated water supply in Washington County

The state Environmental Hearing Board has ruled that a Washington County man did not prove that the chemical contamination of his well water in 2011 was caused by a Range Resources shale gas well and related operations a half-mile from his home.

The case, heard in Pittsburgh last fall by hearing board Chief Judge Thomas Renwand, was the first to challenge a state Department of Environmental Protection ruling that denied contamination from a shale gas development site.

At issue was whether the state DEP followed its own regulations and procedures in ruling that Range’s shale gas drilling operations on a ridge in Amwell, Washington County, did not contaminate the well water of Loren “Buzz” Kiskadden.
