Second major Northeast natural gas pipeline shelved as New York rejects Constitution pipeline

New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation on Friday rejected a Section 401 Water Quality Certification for the Constitution pipeline, effectively shelving the 124-mile interstate natural gas project.

It happened two days after Kinder Morgan suddenly announced on April 20 that it would suspend all work on its 420-mile Northeast Energy Direct, another major interstate pipeline project in the Northeast, due to economic reasons. In fact, in New York and Pennsylvania, Constitution would have largely paralleled the supply path of Northeast Energy Direct.
