Railroad companies, regulators call for stricter tank standards, more inspectors

Tankers filled with crude oil travel on 700 miles of the nearly 5,600 miles of total rail lines in the state, shipping hundreds of thousands of barrels of the fossil fuel to East Coast refineries near Philadelphia and elsewhere. While Pennsylvania has not seen the explosive derailments that have happened in neighboring states and Canada, close calls have brought greater scrutiny to the way the oil is shipped.

The state Senate’s transportation and energy committees held the joint hearing to discuss what is being done, and what might be done differently, to ensure the volatile cargo’s safe travel through communities.
