Pa. business group weighs in on EPA emission targets for power plants

Rising electric rates were one of several concerns outlined by the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry as a U.S. House panel debated whether to give states additional leeway to opt out of the pending Environmental Protection Agency rules.

Such a proposal could delay and significantly weaken those rules, which in their draft form would require power plants in Pennsylvania to reduce their carbon emissions by nearly one-third by 2030.

Environmentalists and other supporters say the emissions standards would force states to switch to cleaner forms of energy, though opponents are pushing back with an array of questions about the potential effects on consumer costs and reliability.
