No increase in severance tax to be included in budget

Ohio legislative leaders will not put an increased severance tax on shale fracking into the two-year state budget, but have agreed to study it for the next three months with a new committee.

“We have made substantial progress in the last two weeks,” Senate President Keith Faber, R-Celina, said of the new plan. He said concepts are being drafted into legislation, but he and Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, R-Clarksville, have agreed to not fight it out in the budget.

The new commission, consisting of three lawmakers from each chamber and the governor’s budget director, must present a report to the legislature by Oct. 1.
